It is standing on a slope, igniting no excitement yet dutifully serving the neighbourhood. The Owner’s Committee tries to dismantle it to avoid future maintenance. Unsurprisingly, when it comes to financing, the Committee receives support from my neighbours, but me. I feel sorry for the healthy 40 years old Banyan tree and what happens is unfortunate and unfair. I have a strong impulse to record the very last days of it, in hope of creating visual records of our loss in the future. In addition to photographing the tree, I contacted the Conservancy Association in Hong Kong. An associate responds immediately and conducts a private assessment: the tree looks healthy and shouldn’t be removed. Researching stories of stonewall trees and Banyan trees in Hong Kong, I began to photograph Banyan wall trees throughout the city. It’s an ongoing process. As I acknowledge their histories and relationship with the land, I fall in love with their expressive physical forms. I was moved. Every Hongkonger should be. I endeavor to shed the modern veneer of our city, escaping the chaos of human existence by delving into a realm where time dissolves, and nature's symphony envelops our senses. Aided by the enchantment of AI, you witness a city devoid of human touch, slowly dissolving into obscurity. This project comprises a series of toned cyanotype prints – an ancient photographic technique dating back to the 19th century. Pioneered by botanist and photographer Anna Atkins, who created a photographic album of algae specimens, this method is considered a precursor to the first photobook in history. In my iteration, I utilise this technique to "collect" various species found in Hong Kong. I carefully selected six ancient beings for this sequence, a sunbathing prehistoric creature, spirals on ancient marble… each a testament to a time long before humanity's footprint. Rituals induce anxiety. Rituals provide safety. Rituals create opportunities. Rituals bring reflexivity. The short film is a collaboration with my fiancée. The idea originated from our experience about the rituals in life, which things tend to happen with collective perceptions and rules. And sometimes a pause might introduce clarity and insights. “Pause” has come to our lives in a sudden due to the coronavirus. For us, it is a chance for self-reflection.
